(EDS) Exclusive Financial Aid Programs
These programs are IN ADDITION TO the standard
financial aid (grants & loans) available to eligible Graduate
Student Financial
Aid Applicants.
1.
Cal Grant Teaching Credential Program Benefits (5th year Cal
Grant Renewal)
An additional year of Cal Grant payment for Cal Grant Recipients
seeking an initial teaching credential.
Current Cal Grant A and B recipients may be eligible for renewal of their Cal
Grant award for an additional year if accepted and enrolled in the UCSD Joint
Credential/Masters program within 15 months of the end of the term for which
the recipient last received a Cal Grant payment. The additional year of payment
is provided to students seeking an initial teaching credential and cannot be
used for other graduate level courses of study.
Eligibility Criteria:

Must have a Bachelors
Degree

Must
maintain Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) requirements.

Must
have a minimum unmet need of $100.
-
May not
be in default on any student loan.
-
May not
owe any federal or state grant refund.
-
Must
be accepted and enrolled in the UCSD Joint Credential/Masters
program within 15 months
of the end of the
term for which the recipient last received
a Cal Grant payment.
There is no required
Service Commitment.

2. Assumption Programe of Loans for Education (APLE)
Eligibility Criteria:
-
Must
be grade level three, at the minimum, to apply.
-
Must
have received or is approved to receive educational loans issued
through institutions
of higher education.
-
Must
be in a program leading to a Bachelors
degree or in a teacher preparation program.
-
Is not
in default on a federal student loan or has made satisfactory
repayment
arrangements.
-
Does
not owe money on a federal or state grant, or has made satisfactory
repayment arrangements.
-
Must
sign an agreement to teach in a California public school for
four consecutive
years after
obtaining an
initial teaching
credential.

3. Federal Loan Forgiveness for Teachers
Program
Eligibility Criteria:
-
Applicant
must not have had an outstanding federal student loan balance
as of
October 1, 1998.
-
The loan(s)
for which the applicant is seeking forgiveness was made prior
to the end of their
fifth academic year
of qualifying teaching service.
-
Is
not in default on a federal student loan or has made satisfactory
repayment
arrangements.
-
Applicant
must not have received loan forgiveness
benefits through
the AmeriCorps
Program for
the same teaching service
for which
they are seeking loan
forgiveness through this program.
-
Non-profit
private school teachers who are
exempt from
state certification
requirements
by passing
a competency
test of subject
knowledge and
skills. Competency
test must be recognized by
5 or more states
for determining
highly qualified
teacher requirements, and the
score achieved must
be equal to or greater than
the average passing
score of teachers
in those
five states.
Filing Requirements:

For
the Award Amount listed as up to $5,000
in loan forgiveness, borrower must be employed
full-time for five consecutive years as a highly
qualified elementary or secondary school teacher
at a designated low-income qualifying school.

For
the Award Amount listed as up to $17,500
in loan forgiveness, borrower must be employed
full-time for five consecutive years as a highly
qualified secondary school teacher of science
or math or a highly qualified elementary or secondary
school special education teacher at a designated
low-income qualifying school.

Up to $5,000 in loan forgiveness for a borrower employed full-time for five consecutive
years as a highly qualified elementary or secondary
school teacher at a designated low-income qualifying
school.

Up to $17,500 in loan forgiveness for a borrower employed full-time for five
consecutive years as a highly qualified secondary school
teacher of science or math or a highly qualified elementary or secondary school special education teacher at a designated
low-income qualifying school.

4. Federal Perkins Loan Teacher Cancellation
Eligibility Criteria:
Applicant must meet one of the following eligibility qualifications:

A full-time teacher in a public or other nonprofit elementary or secondary school
designated as low-income by the Department of Education; or
-
A full-time special education teacher in a public or other nonprofit elementary
or secondary school system; or
-
A full-time teacher in a public or other nonprofit elementary or secondary school system teaching mathematics, science, foreign languages, bilingual
education or any other field of expertise determined to have a shortage of qualified teachers by the State Department of Education.

UCSD Perkins Loan borrowers can download a Request for Cancellation form at acs-education.com.
Requests for cancellation must be made annually.

Full-time for a full academic year, or the equivalent.
The employing school is responsible for defining full-time.
A full academic year or the equivalent for Perkins Loan cancellation purposes
is defined as one complete school year or two half years that are: 1. from different school years, excluding summer
sessions; 2. complete; and 3. consecutive. The two half years also must generally fall within a 12-month
period.

5. Noyce Scholarship
EDS in partnership with the UCSD Physical Sciences Division has available the
Robert Noyce Teacher Scholarship Program grant from the National
Science Foundation. The program will provide a $12,000 Noyce
scholarship to approximately 16 mathematics, chemistry, physics,
and geoscience majors annually in UCSD's EDS undergraduate minor
and graduate intern credential program. As a condition of their
scholarship, recipients will be required to commit to serving two
years as a secondary mathematics or science teacher in a high-need
school.
Eligibility Criteria:
-
Enrolled at the University of California San Diego.
-
Majoring in, or have majored in a field of science, technology, engineering,
or mathematics (i.e. STEM majors). One could be majoring in,
or have majored in, any major in one of the Engineering Departments,
the Mathematics Department, the Physics Department, the Chemistry-Biochemistry
Department, or the Biology Department or be majoring in, or
have majored in Earth Sciences or Environmental Systems.

Selected an academic major that will serve as a teaching specialization in Biology,
Chemistry, Physics, Geoscience, Earth Science, or Mathematics.
If selected you need to have completed subject matter requirements
prior to receiving the scholarship (see EDS student advisors
for details on subject matter requirements).

Enrolled in UCSD CalTeach SMI minor; Minor in Mathematics Education or Minor
in Science Education
-
A minimum GPA of 3.0.
-
Senior undergraduate student or graduate student standing
You must also:
-
Awardees must pursue an academic major in a STEM field as described above (biology,
chemistry, mathematics, physics, or earth science) that will
serve as their teaching specialization in grades 6 through
12.

Teach for a minimum of two years for each year of scholarship support in a "high-need"
school. Scholarship monies must be returned if the Noyce Scholar
does not complete the teaching requirement.
The funds can be disbursed as early as Fall 2009, and you do NOT need to demonstrate
financial need to qualify
You should only consider this program if you are planning to enter a teaching
credential program immediately upon graduation or are currently in the
credential program.
Please note that if you do not complete the two year teaching requirement,
the grant must be repaid to UCSD.

6. Teach Grant
We are pleased to inform you of a new federal funding source via the US Dept
of Education. It is called the TEACH Grant. You can apply to receive
funding for up to $4000 a year ($8000 over two years) if you meet the following
criteria:
1. Have and maintain a UCSD cumulative Undergraduate GPA of 3.25 or above
2. Senior standing as prior to Fall 2009.
3. Be enrolled in coursework that is necessary to begin a career in teaching
or plan to complete such course work.
4. Willingness to teach for 4 of your first 8 years in a designated low-income
school
5. More than half of your time teaching during each year must be in a high
need field: Math, science, foreign language, bilingual education, English language
acquisition, special education, or reading specialist.
The funds can be disbursed as early as this Fall, and you do NOT
need to demonstrate financial need to qualify, though you do need to
submit the 2008-09 FAFSA form.
You should only consider this program if you are planning to enter a teaching
credential program immediately upon graduation. You can then apply for additional
funds ($4000) for your year in the credential program.
Please note that if you do not completed requirements 3 and 4 above, the grant
will eventually convert to a loan and the interest accrues from the point at
which you received the funds.
