Information Regarding Test Requirements

California Basic Educational Skills Test (CBEST) Top

  • Proof of passage for this exam is required for all persons applying to any of the Multiple or Single Subject Credential/M.Ed. programs. It is also required for those applying to the MA/ASL program. PLEASE NOTE that only Multiple Subject and MA-ASL candidates are exempt from taking the CBEST if passage of an additional CSET exam (142) is presented. (see CSET item)

  • There is no limit to the number of times you may take any or all sections of the CBEST in order to pass. You do not have to pass all three sections at the same time. For all purposes, individuals only need to pass the CBEST once.
  • Scores are mailed within 4-6 weeks.

Reading Instruction Competence Assessment (RICA) Top

  • This exam must be passed by all Multiple Subject students before they complete the credential program. This does not need to be passed before applying to the program.

  • Multiple Subject Teaching Credential candidates must take and pass either one of the two assessments (written exam or video performance) to fulfill the RICA requirement.
  • Exam may be taken as many times as necessary to pass at least one of the assessments.
  • Scores are received within 4-6 weeks.
California Subject Examination for Teachers (CSET) Top

  • ALL MULTIPLE SUBJECT CANDIDATES MUST PASS THIS EXAM. Single Subject applicants must pass this exam OR complete the Subject Matter Waiver Preparation Program (SMPP). Any questions about the (SMPP) should be directed to Ed Ashton at (858) 534-7297.

  • The exam is made up of three or four "subtests" and each of subtest may be retaken as many times as necessary to pass. (Only the subtest(s) not passed can be retaken).
  • Scores are received within 4-6 weeks.
  • Program specific list of subtests: cset test codes(doc).
  • NEW INFORMATION: ONLY Multiple Subject and MA-ASL candidates can be exempt from taking the CBEST when in addition to this required CSET (101, 102, 103 subtests), proof of passage of the new CSET (142 subtest- Writing Skills) is shown.

Graduate Record Examinations (GRE) Top

  • All applicants for EDS must pass this exam.

  • General Test consists of Verbal Reasoning, Quantitative Reasoning, and Analytical Writing.
  • Scores for the Verbal and Quantitative Reasoning sections (if taken via computer) will be received immediately following the exam. Writing scores will be sent to you within 10-15 days after you take the test.
  • Scores are received within 4-6 weeks.

U.S. Constitution Exam Top

  • Must be passed (if course was not taken as an undergrad) to receive either a Multiple or a Single Subject Credential.

  • 25 True/False and 25 multiple-choice questions (50 total)
  • Exam is based on the book The Constitution of the United States, an Introduction by Floyd G. Cullop. (Available in most libraries and bookstores).
  • Exam may be taken as many times as necessary to pass. If passing score is not achieved, the exam may be retaken free of charge (one time only) by showing the letter with the non-passing score.
  • Note: If you are not located in San Diego, an online U.S. Constitution course is available. A (1 unit) combination Preparation Course and Examination is offered through UCSD Extension. This can be taken either in person or online through Distance Learning. Please visit the extension website at http://extension.ucsd.edu and type "Constitution" into the search option.
