Master of Education Degree and Teaching Credential Program

The Department of Education Studies offers a joint Master of Education Degree/Teaching Credential Program. Graduates can apply to receive one of the following credentials

What is a Teaching Credential?

A teaching credential is a state-issued license to teach in a public school.  California law requires all teachers in CA public schools to hold a valid teaching credential.

Why earn a Master’s Degree?

There are many benefits to earning your Master’s Degree along with your Teaching Credential.

Benefits of the EDS Program

  • Smaller, cohort-based program with a high-degree of personalization
  • High-level of support from faculty
  • Learn from experienced classroom teachers with extensive networks in local schools
  • Last year, all M.Ed. graduates received teaching jobs soon after completing the program
  • 50% of students received scholarships last year
  • All students complete a teaching practicum as part of the program. Single Subject candidates may be able to receive an internship placement where they will be paid for their teaching practicum.
  • Employers have identified the strengths of UCSD’s programs as:
    • Preparation for teaching English Language Learners
    • Commitment to equity and partnerships with low-income, urban schools
    • High quality of lesson planning and teaching

Program Options

UCSD Undergraduates who complete the Foundations or Math/Science EDS minor will be able to obtain a Master of Education and a Teaching Credential in one year of graduate study, upon admission into the graduate program. This means UCSD students can receive their Bachelor's Degree, Master's Degree and Teaching Credential in 5 years of study total.

For students who cannot complete the coursework as an undergraduate, there are also options to complete an accelerated 13-month program (for Multiple Subject Credential candidates) or a 22-month program (for Single Subject Credential candidates).
